| | India may ask SAARC nations to unitedly fight terror Tuesday, December 30 2003 20:32 Hrs (IST) New Delhi:
India is expected to call upon the SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Co-operation) nations to adopt a joint strategy to unitedly combat the menace of terrorism and make concerted efforts to step up regional economic co-operation during the summit in Islamabad.
The twin issues are likely to be focussed by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in his address to the three-day summit of the seven-member grouping from January 4, officials said.
Vajpayee will fly to the Pakistani capital on January 3, two days after restoration of air links between the two countries after a gap of two years.
Besides Vajpayee, the summit will be attended by leaders from Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Maldives and Sri Lanka besides host country Pakistan.
Pakistani authorities have assured India that they are taking all precautions for the security of the Prime Minister during his stay in Islamabad.
"Our own people are making their own assessment and Pakistan Government has said it is taking all precautions," Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani said in Mumbai.
Elaborate security arrangements are being made for Vajpayee's visit in close consultation with Pakistani agencies.
Pakistan has permitted India to bring its own commandos and other security apparatus, including a BMW car fitted with jammers, sophisticated gadgetry and de-bugging devices for the Prime Minister's security.
