Eleven extremists including a top naxal carrying a reward of Rs 2 lakh on his head today (Dec 30, 2003) surrendered before the Director General of Police (DGP) S R Sukumara.
Of the surrendered ultras, six belong to PWG (People's War Group), three to Janasakhti and two to Pratighatna groups, Sukumara told reporters.
The surrendered extremists were carrying their activities in Warangal, Adilabad, Anantapur and Guntur districts, he said.
Two women naxals including area committee secretary (ACS) Sandela Karunasree alias Lathakka were among the surrendered naxals.
Chowdarapu Thirupati alias Srinu, a district committee member of PWG, carried a reward of Rs 2 lakh on his head while is his wife Sandela Karunasree carries a reward of Rs 50,000, Sukumara said and added that Thrirupati was involved in various offences including 15 murders.
Disillusionment with the party ideology and programmes, ill-health, non-co-operation of the villagers in providing food and shelter and incoherent attitude of the cadres and disunity in the lower rung were the reasons cited by the ultras for their surrender.
