| | BJP seeks electoral alliance with AIADMK Wednesday, December 31 2003 18:17 Hrs (IST) Coimbatore (TN):
As if waiting for the exit of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) from National Democratic Alliance (NDA) fold, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today (Dec 31, 2003) said it would not hesitate to go in for an alliance with All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) for the coming Lok Sabha polls.
Notwithstanding the humiliation that it had received at the hands of AIADMK when it was an ally of the Vajpayee-led conglomeration in 1998, BJP national secretary L Ganesan justified such a probable move by saying that a "selective amnesia" was required in the present day politics, meaning there was no permanent foes or friends in politics.
With DMK out of the NDA fold and with an electoral alliance with Congress a possibility, BJP had no hesitation in forging an electoral pact with AIADMK. "There is no need for anybody to make comments on such an arrangement," he told reporters in Coimbatore.
On AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa's recent statement that she wanted an alliance sans Congress and the BJP, he said Jayalalithaa had not reiterated this point afterwards.
Jayalalithaa in her address to party cadres recently had stated that her party would not seek any alliance, but if some party came forward to seek a tie-up, AIADMK would ensure the victory of these parties.
To this observation, Ganesan claimed that it revealed that she was prepared to have an alliance with the BJP.
The present relationship between DMK and Congress, which was reportedly forged over telephone, had been decided very long ago, Ganesan said and claimed that DMK's decision to quit NDA was taken 18 months ago.
