6 killed, 9 hurt as ultras attack JK railway station

Jammu: Heavily-armed militants, in Army combat, today (Jan 2, 2003) attacked the Jammu railway station firing indiscriminately and lobbing hand-grenades triggering a gunbattle with security forces in which four jawans and two militants were killed and nine wounded.

The killed security jawans included Lieutenant Triveni Singh who led the operation against the militants, Inspector General of Police (IGP) P L Gupta told reporters.

Army was requisitioned soon after the ultras, numbering two to three, attacked the railway station at 19:00 hours (IST).

"The operation against the militants is over. We can see bodies of the two ultras. Search is on if any more ultra was involved in the attack," DGP Gopal Sharma said.

The injured included two civilians, he said.

The attack came two days before the start of the SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) Summit in Islamabad.
