'NE ultras being backed by Bangladesh Army'
Friday, January 2 2004 19:58 Hrs (IST)

Agartala: Director General of Police of Tripura G M Srivastav today (Jan 2, 2004) reiterated there were camps of insurgents of the Northeastern region in Bangladesh and alleged that the ultras are being backed by the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) and Bangladesh Army.

Bangladesh media had recently reported about a camp of Tripura insurgents being searched by police at Habilcherra in Bangladesh's Chittagong Hill tracts and six United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) ultras being picked up in the neighbouring country. However, we are not aware of any case being registered against them, he told reporters.

Srivastav said there was confusion between Bangladesh Rifles and the local police over the issue of handling of the Indian militants based in Bangladesh but was confident that internal pressure would force that country too to launch a Bhutan-like operation against the ultras.
