Srinagar: Launching its first offensive since taking over counterinsurgency operations from BSF (Border Security Force), the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) gunned down two unidentified militants in an ambush in Soura area of the city, official sources said in Srinagar today (Jan 4, 2004).

CRPF laid an ambush at Anchar Lake area in Soura last night following a tip off about presence of militants, the sources said.

The ultras opened fire upon being challenged by the security forces, with the latter retaliating. Two militants were killed in the return of fire, they said.

One AK rifle, three magazines, one pistol, one wireless set and four hand-grenades were recovered from the slain militants, the sources said.

The identity of the militants or their organisational affiliation could not be ascertained so far, they added.
