All-Assam Students Union for unilateral ceasefire
Monday, January 5 2004 20:46 Hrs (IST)

Nalbari (Assam): The All-Assam Students Union (AASU) has urged the Centre to declare unilateral ceasefire for one week to create an atmosphere for negotiation with the ULFA (United Liberation Front of Assam).

Addressing a "people's meet" held in Nalbari, the AASU president, Prabin Boro, said the Centre should create such an atmosphere to talk to the ULFA to bring about permanent peace in the region.

The people of Assam also urge the ULFA to come to the negotiation table and respond positively if such an offer was made from the Centre.

He demanded cent per cent reservation for local youths in central and semi-government sectors.

The AASU general secretary, Amiya Bhutan, clarified that the student body did not support the demand of ULFA for a sovereign Assam, but said they would oppose any policy by the Centre, which was 'wrong'.
