Retired ADGP captured by 'wife' rescued in Bihar Thursday, January 8 2004 17:37 Hrs (IST) Patna:
A former Bihar additional director general of police (ADGP) B Srinivasan has been rescued by the city police from his own house, where he was allegedly held captive for a week by a woman, police said today (Jan 8, 2004).
The rescue followed a complaint with the Kotwali police station by Srinivasan's brother B Raghavan yesterday. As per the complaint, one Archana Devi, who claimed that she was wife of the retired police officer, had locked him inside a room in his officers' residence and had been torturing him to part with his money.
The police immediately rushed to the spot and rescued the former ADGP, who is suffering from paralysis, after breaking open the lock of the room, deputy superintendent of police (DSP), Kotwali, Shashi Bhushan Sharma said. The telephone connection of his house was also snapped.
The woman was arrested from the house but later released on bail, he said.
The DSP said that Srinivasan, who retired as ADGP, civil defence, on December 31, in his statement before a magistrate had strongly contested Archana's claim that he had married her in a court.
Srinivasan further told the magistrate that he had given shelter to the woman after she became homeless during an anti-encroachment drive.
He also alleged that Archana Devi had withdrawn about Rs seven lakh from his bank account by forcing him to sign a cheque.
Later Srinivasan left for Chennai along with his brother, the DSP said.
