| | K'taka assures fair trial, adequate security to Jaya Thursday, January 15 2004 17:04 Hrs (IST) New Delhi:
Karnataka Government today (Jan 15, 2004) stated in an affidavit before the Supreme Court that it would ensure a fair trial and provide adequate security to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa in the trial of disproportionate assets cases against her at Bangalore.
This affidavit was filed by the S M Krishna Government responding to the apex court's notice to it on Jayalalithaa's application seeking transfer of two cases against her from Karnataka to any other State.
The apex court had transferred the trial of the cases from Chennai to Bangalore on November 18 last year apprehending that if the trial was allowed to continue in the Tamil Nadu capital it would lead to failure of justice undermining public confidence in the judicial system.
Rejecting Jayalalithaa's apprehension about her security and possibility of a fair trial at Bangalore due to the "hostile" environment there against her due to Cauvery water disputes, Karantaka said it "will ensure that the trial is fair and such security as may be necessary be provided".
"Karnataka has no interest in the outcome of the trial. It looks upon it only as a Constitutional duty to be discharged to effectuate the orders of the Supreme Court," it said.
