Gang-rape accused faces public wrath in courtroom
Friday, January 16 2004 19:56 Hrs (IST)

Ahmedabad: Delhi-based businessman Sajal Jain, the prime accused in the sensational gang-rape case of New Year eve got a bitter taste of public outcry generated by the incident as people pelted tomatoes at him and tried to gherao and beat him.

The gang-rape and the subsequent suicide of the city girl has triggered a tremendous public outcry in Ahmedabad since last week and today their ire reached a flashpoint with enraged public not sparing the courtroom also, which was left completely vandalised.

Interestingly, lawyers and the metropolitan court also joined the public in making every attempt to reach out and beat Sajal while he was being produced in the courtroom.

Vociferously demanding justice for the bereaved Joshi family, people began swelling the court premises since afternoon and resorted to heavy slogan shouting.

Slogans of "Sajal ko hamare hawale kar do (hand over Sajal to us)" reverberated the air as police had a trenchant time trying to control the outrageous mob.

Police had to seek reinforcement to ensure that Jain was taken back into custody in safety.
