NCW to conduct 'independent probe' in gang rape case
Saturday, January 17 2004 13:51 Hrs (IST)

Ahmedabad: A three-member team of the National Commission for Women (NCW) today (Jan 17, 2004) arrived in the city to conduct an "independent investigation" in the alleged gang rape case of a 24-year-old girl on New Year's Eve night, who later committed suicide.

The team comprising chairperson, Purnima Advani, member, Nirmala Sitaram and counsel member Jalil Ahmed visited the family of the victim.

In the meeting that lasted around two hours the NCW took "minute details" of the case, the incidents that led to the victim's suicide on January 7 by hanging herself and also met several neighbours.

Media persons were not allowed to attend the meeting.

Advani said just before leaving to meet the prime accused, Delhi-based businessman Sajal Jain at the Dariapur police station that the NCW would conduct its own "independent investigation and bring out the truth".
