Arundhati Roy lashes out at Western imperial powers Monday, January 19 2004 11:07 Hrs (IST) Mumbai:
Booker Prize winner and Human Rights activist Arundhati Roy today (Jan 18, 2004) lashed out at Western imperial powers for using "corrupted version of feminism" to justify war.
"According to corporate media the feminist face of 21st century appears to be of Tony Blair and George Bush," she said while addressing a conference on "Wars Against Women and Women Against War" at the ongoing World Social Forum.
"US (United States) is using anti-women Islamic text to justify its war against Taliban. However, the war against women launched by the West has its own horrendous consequences," she said.
Women today are caught-up between the brutality of tradition and the brutality of modern world, she said.
"We are convulsed by the kind of violence that took place in that State and the guilty have still gone unpunished," she said alluding to the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) Government in Gujarat, adding, "A fascist dictator is worse than a fascist democrat."
What is worst is that the same Government that watched and participated in the atrocities against women was elected to the power, she said.
She lamented that it was not only men but also women who had elected the Government in Gujarat to power.
Referring to BJP's campaign to distribute trishul, she warned, "These trishuls can soon turn against women."
Advocating a non-violent resistance, Roy criticised any violent approach to tackle an issue.
Referring to the global war against women, she said in that in many countries peace is synonymous with war where people are fighting for survival, thanks to developmental projects.
