MiG Corp to deliver 16 fighters for Gorshkov by 2008 Wednesday, January 21 2004 20:37 Hrs (IST) Moscow:
Russia's MiG Aircraft Corporation is to complete the deliveries of 16 multi-role fighter jets by 2008 for deployment on Admiral Gorshkov aircraft carrier acquired by India.
Under the $ 700 million contract inked in New Delhi on January 20 as part of the $ 1.5 billion Gorshkov package deal, MiG Corporation is to deliver 16 MiG-29K carrier based fighters including 4 trainer-cum-combat jets, ITAR-TASS reported, quoting its corporate office in Moscow.
Under the deal, the Indian Navy has also an option of acquiring another 30 fighters by year 2015.
MiG Corporation will also provide complex training to the Indian crews and technicians and flight simulators.
Meanwhile, the Northern Machine-building Enterprise (Sevmash) shipyard in Severodvinsk on White Sea has started the preparation for the transfer of the Admiral Gorshkov aircraft carrier to the Indian Navy, after which it will start the upgradation of the 44-thousand tonne Kiev class aircraft carrier in accordance with the Indian order, Interfax added.
However, some experts quoted by Nezavisimaya Gazeta express doubt in the capability of Sevmash and MiG corporation to bear the cost of Indian deal, as after prolonged negotiations New Delhi got the best price for Gorshkov, but it may not be enough to cover the costs.
