| | Stamp scam: Telgi remanded to police custody Wednesday, January 21 2004 13:44 Hrs (IST) Bangalore:
The Special Court trying fake stamp paper scam cases today (Jan 21, 2004) remanded prime accused Abdul Karim Telgi to police custody for four days from January 24 on an application moved by the Special Investigation Team (STAMPIT) in the wake of his reported claim that he is ready to disclose "big sharks" in the scandal.
STAMPIT had earlier submitted that it is necessary to interrogate Telgi to ascertain further facts and details about the fake stamp papers and the persons involved as reported in a section of the press recently.
The judge, A T Manoli, also ordered that Telgi is free to consult a legal advocate of his choice, and that he be subjected to medical examination and should not be harassed.
Telgi's counsel Abdul Rehman - Telgi has since distanced himself from Rehman - had reportedly quoted him as saying that he was ready to make a confessional statement in the presence of a senior police official and his advocate.
Special prosecutor B R Nanjundaiah told reporters outside Parappana Agrahara jail on the city outskirts, where the Special Court is located, that interrogation of Telgi is expected to throw fresh light on the scam and provide more clues.
