Top LeT militant killed in Poonch gunbattle

Jammu: A top Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militant was killed in a fierce gunbattle with troops in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir today (Jan 25, 2004), official sources said.

During a combing operation to track down militants responsible for killing a woman and injuring her son-in-law in Surankote hills in Poonch district yesterday (Jan 24, 2004), troops discovered a hideout of terrorists and attacked it, the sources said.

In the ensuing encounter between militants and troops, the LeT militant was killed, they said, adding the encounter was still on.

One AK rifle, four grenades, seven magazines, 120 rounds, 2 IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices) and one radio set were recovered from the militant.

The slain militant has been identified as Abu Talah of Pakistan, they said.
