Naxals involved in attack on Naidu shot dead

Tirupati: Two naxalites involved in the mine attack on Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on October 1 last year were killed in a police encounter past midnight last night (Jan 24, 2004) at Piler about 50 kms from Tirupati, police said.

Erra Satyam and Sivanand, who were nabbed at Chikabalapur in Karnataka yesterday, were shot at when they tried to snatch a pistol from a policeman to attack the escort team when they were being brought to Tirupati, police said.

Satyam died on the spot while Sivanand succumbed to his bullet injuries at the Government hospital at Piler in the wee hours, police said.

The naxalites belonged to the 11-member group which allegedly planned the attack on Chandrababu Naidu, police said.

Further details were awaited, police said.
