UP Youth Cong urge Priyanka, Rahul to join politics Sunday, January 25 2004 17:30 Hrs (IST) New Delhi:
After their last week's visit to Amethi, a convention of the block presidents of Uttar Pradesh Youth Congress today (Jan 25, 2004) demanded that Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Vadra should join active politics and contest the coming Lok Sabha polls and also sought snapping of ties with Mulayam Singh Yadav Government immediately.
Responding to reporters, Congress President Sonia Gandhi gave her oft-repeated reply saying it was for her children to take a decision on the issue.
"My response is the same. I have been repeating that it is for Priyanka and Rahul to decide whether to join active politics or not. It will be better if you ask them," Gandhi told reporters after attending a separate meeting of the State chiefs of party's frontal organisations.
Earlier, at its 90-minute meeting in New Delhi, presided over by AICC (All India Congress Committee) General Secretary Mukul Wasnik, over 800 block presidents of the UP Youth Congress passed a resolution requesting the party high command to persuade the Gandhi siblings to enter active politics and contest the coming polls.
The convention also passed a resolution saying that Congress should not have any truck with Samajwadi Party and demanded snapping of ties with Yadav-led Government, which "had always connived with communal forces". They said continuation of support to it was not beneficial to the party.
Talking to reporters, UP Youth Congress President Nadeem Asharaf Jaisi said the resolution would be presented to the Congress President for consideration.
