Vishwanathan Anand wins Corus chess title
Monday, January 26 2004 11:49 Hrs (IST)

Wijk Aan Zee (The Netherlands): World Rapid champion Viswanathan Anand won his second successive title in the Corus chess tournament with a quick draw against Grandmaster Ivan Sokolov of Netherlands in the 13th and final round game that concluded.

Not wanting to take any risk after a previous round debacle against Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria, Anand settled for the draw in just 14 moves with white pieces, well aware that his main contemporaries had a daunting task on hand as they had to win with black pieces to catch up with him.

As it turned out, Grandmaster Michael Adams of England could not score the required full point against the solid play of Russian champion Peter Svidler and signed the peace treaty in just 26 moves while GM Peter Leko of Hungary was tortured by top-seeded Russian Vladimir Kramnik for long before the draw was finally agreed to on move 65.
