CBI nabs 12 people in anti-corruption raids

New Delhi: Continuing with its anti-corruption drive, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested 12 people during this month so far and recovered cash and property worth Rs 2.50 crore including over Rs one crore from the residence of an assistant director of Income Tax in Bihar.

Giving details, a CBI spokesman said agency sleuths arrested the assistant director (investigations) of Income Tax in Dhanbad, Bihar for allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs one lakh from one person for settling a case in favour of the complainant.

The accused assistant director had allegedly demanded the bribe for settlement of Income Tax accounts in favour of the complainant and had asked the complainant to hand-over the money to a person on his behalf, who was also subsequently arrested.

During the search of the officer's house, cash of about Rs 1.08 crore, fixed deposits worth Rs 7.65 lakh, shares worth Rs two lakh, bank balances of about Rs 3.69 lakh, jewellery and household articles worth Rs 4.8 lakh were seized.

CBI also arrested three officials of the directorate general of supplies and disposals including a deputy director (registration) for allegedly accepting bribes.

The other two officials arrested were a section officer and an assistant. Immediately after their arrests, CBI carried out searches at the residence of these officials, which led to a cash recovery of Rs 8.06 lakh.

The bribes were allegedly demanded from a consultant to various private companies by the said DGS&D officials who had been harassing him by raising "frivolous deficiencies" in the papers submitted for enlistment and registration of the private companies, the spokesman said.

During this month, CBI arrested a branch manager of Unit Bank of India in Darbhanga, Bihar while allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 5,000 from a complainant for release of the second instalment of Rs 25,000 out of a loan of Rs 50,000 under Indira Awas Yojana.

The spokesman said that besides these, CBI also arrested an additional director of Central Government health scheme, a senior army officer of the rank of Major, a principal of a Kendriya Vidyalaya, resident medical officer of Pune Cantonment Board Hospital, a store keeper with the Railways who is also a Mazdoor Union leader and an Income Tax officer posted a Eluru, Andhra Pradesh.
