Mysterious 'blasts' reported from Rajkot again
Wednesday, January 28 2004 19:42 Hrs (IST)

Ahmedabad: Mysterious underground "blast" like noises have been reported from parts of Rajkot district with the earth also shaking vigorously in some parts, police said in Ahmedabad today (Jan 28, 2004).

The underground "blasts" spread fear and panic among locals and forced people to flee their homes after the noises began in the wee hours today, Rajkot rural police told reporters.

Police however said no reports of casualty, injury of any structure collapsing has been received as yet.

The "blasts" were reported from Jetpur, Gondal, Chachapar and nearby areas of the district and one resident of Jetpur also told police that he had to run away from his house after the earth started shaking vigorously in the wee hours followed by a loud blast from the ground.

Officials and seismic experts have rushed to the places from where the blasts were reported and are investigating.

These mysterious "blasts" had prompted experts from the Centre to camp at Rajkot and Jamnagar district last year also following similar incidents.

Even though none of the experts have managed to explain the real cause of the "blasts" they did say that it was "not on account of any major seismic activity".
