Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) raided the noted diet therapist Anjali Mukherjee's clinic premises in suburban Andheri and five other outlets in the city last night (Jan 27, 2004).
FDA raided the head office and confiscated the stock of medicines and sealed the existing ones for investigation based on a complaint made by former Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) K Nalinakshan, who was undergoing weight loss programme at Anjali's outlet at Colaba in South Mumbai.
Nalinakshan is currently admitted at Bombay Hospital, FDA sources said.
"We have also sent out investigating team to Bombay Hospital to check for the medicine, which the IAS official was taking," the joint commissioner of FDA in charge of Greater Mumbai H D Salunke said.
Officers of FDA have also begun raid at the outlets in Colaba, Ghatkopar, Bandra and Malad, while the Thane FDA office has been instructed to raid at Anjali Mukherjee's Thane outlet.
Anjali Mukherjee has in all eight centres, six in Maharashtra and two in Delhi.
"We have sealed the stock as we doubt some of these medicine could be spurious drugs," FDA commissioner Uttam Rao Kobragade said.
"We are also in the process of questioning the doctors at the headquarters as well as the other outlets," he added
The doctor, under whom Nalinakshan was undergoing therapy for weight loss was holding a degree of Bachelor of Ayurveda and Surgery from Karnataka University.
