The Supreme Court today (Jan 29, 2004) ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the alleged issuance of bailable warrants against the President, Chief Justice of India, a Supreme Court judge and a senior advocate of the court by a metropolitan magistrate in Ahmedabad.
A Bench comprising Chief Justice V N Khare, Justice S B Sinha and Justice S H Kapadia asked the agency to submit its report by February 6, the next date of hearing.
The court also issued notices to the Centre, the State of Gujarat, Registrar General of Gujarat High Court, the "erring" metropolitan magistrate Brahm Bhatt and Suresh Jethalal Sanghvi, who purportedly filed a false complaint and on that basis the warrants were issued.
The court also issued notices to three advocates - Iqbal Katia, Narender Chaudhary and Harish Bhawaniwala - who acted as middlemen between the complainant and the magistrate.
