Sunday, February 1 2004 15:57 Hrs (IST)

Gannaur (Uttar Pradesh): Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav-SP (Samajwadi Party) has won the prestigious Gannaur Assembly by-election by a record margin, official said.

Yadav, who contested the seat that became vacant after the resignation of an SP member after he became Chief Minister, polled 1,83,899 votes against BSP's (Bahujan Samaj Party) Arif Ali who polled 11314 votes.

BJP's (Bharatiya Janata Party) Gulfam Yadav polled only 6941 votes.

Both Ali and Yadav have forfeited their security deposits.

In yesterday's (Jan 31, 2004) re-polling in Gannaur Assembly constituency a record number of 84.93 per cent votes were polled in 107 polling centres.

Polling in Gannaur, in Badayun district, was held on January 24 and the result was to be declared on January 27, but on complaints by opposition parties the Election Commission ordered re-polling in some centres.
