Sunday, February 1 2004 15:59 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: European armament major, Swedish Weapons Systems will exhibit a live upgraded 155MM FH BO5 L52 artillery gun during the forthcoming Defence Expo beginning on February 4.

The upgraded gun, which has an extended range of more than 40 kms and capability of firing next generation smart ammunition, has already undergone two field trials for the Indian Army.

The FH BO5 L52 Swedish gun is bidding along with Denel of South Africa and Soltam of Israel for an Indian contract to purchase 400 more upgraded towed 155MM guns, which is reported to be in a finalisation stage.

The new Swedish gun is successor to the FH39 calibre gun nicknamed "Hero of Kargil" in the 1999 conflict.

The Swedish company has recently been taken over by the American artillery giant United Industries.

Another Swedish company taking part in the Expo is FFV Ordnance AB that produces anti-tank 84mm Carl Gustaf missile system that has been already inducted into the Indian Army. The company is seeking a technology transfer agreement on production of these missiles in India.

SAAB AB, another Swedish major which manufactures surface to air, warship to land and surface to surface missiles, and SSAB Barracuda AB, world's largest maker of military camouflage systems, are also taking part in the fair.
