No need for Antony to resign, says Muraleedharan Monday, February 2 2004 14:23 Hrs (IST) Kozhikode:
Problems confronting the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) would be sorted out amicably in the next few days and there was no need for Chief Minister A K Antony to resign, K Muraleedharan, MP (Member of Parliament), who recently quit as KPCC president, said today (Feb 2, 2004).
"The party high command has now come out with a new formula to solve the crisis in the party and therefore there is no need to talk about the old formula (that called for Antony's resignation)," he said before leaving for New Delhi.
Senior Congress leader K Karunakaran had recently demanded that Antony also quit office following the stepping down of Muraleedharan from the KPCC president post.
Muraleedharan, who is scheduled to hold talks with the party high command to sort out the pending issues, denied that he alone had been entrusted with the job of pacifying senior Congress leader K Karunakaran, from shelving the idea of forming a new party in the wake of his differences with the party leadership.
"Along with me, several UDF (United Democratic Front) leaders and even the Front's allies have been engaged in the job," he said.
Expressing confidence that Karunakaran would not quit the party to float a new one, he said all issues pertaining to the party's State unit would be solved amicably during the next few days.
On Jan 31, the party high command accepted Muraleedharan's resignation, but asked him to continue till an alternative arrangement is made.
