Stamp scam: Show-cause notice issued to former DGP Monday, February 2 2004 15:01 Hrs (IST) Mumbai:
Maharashtra Government has served a show-cause notice to former Director General of Police (DGP), Criminal Investigation Department (CID), T K Choudhary, in connection with the transfer of a police inspector who was probing a case against stamps scamster Abdul Karim Telgi.
The show-cause notice was issued to Choudhary on January 31, the day he retired from service, sources said.
The notice has asked the retired police official to reply within six weeks why action should not be initiated against him for alleged lapses in the transfer of Inspector Jahid from Mumbai Crime Branch to Nagpur.
Inspector Jahid was transferred from Cyber Cell of Mumbai Crime Branch to Nagpur City by Choudhary in 2002, in capacity of Additional DGP (Establishment).
It is suspected that scamster Abdul Karim Telgi used his influence in Mantralaya to get Jahid transferred since he was probing a sensitive case against Telgi, sources said.
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the fake stamps scam also came across this development during the course of the scam probe, and later quizzed Choudhary thrice at Pune.
The SIT later submitted a detailed report to Government on the issue, recommending action against the senior official, sources added.
A senior Home Department official confirmed that the Government has served a show-cause notice to Choudhary asking him to reply within six weeks.
When contacted, the Director General of Police (DGP), S M Shangari, however, expressed ignorance about the development, clarifying that the DGP office does not come in picture in such cases.
