No case of bird flu in India, assure officials
Tuesday, February 3 2004 18:00 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: As the world fears possibility of human-to-human spread of avian flu, officials in New Delhi said no case of bird flu has been reported from anywhere in the country.

"Internal review meeting of the Department of Animal Husbandry was held today (Feb 3, 2004), in which officials expressed satisfaction on measures taken so far to prevent spread of bird flu among the poultry," Dr V K Taneja, commissioner, Animal Husbandry, said.

"There is no cause for worry as no cases have been reported in India so far," Taneja said.

The meeting was attended by poultry specialists and industry representatives, besides officials from the department, Taneja said.

World Health Organisation (WHO) was investigating whether there had been any human-to-human spread of bird flu in the current outbreak, Taneja said, adding steps would be initiated by the Government if such a thing is confirmed by WHO.

Meanwhile, 12 people are confirmed to have died of bird flu in Vietnam and Thailand. Reports said a four-year-old died in Thailand of suspected bird flu today.
