Vaiko moves Madras HC against bail conditions Wednesday, February 4 2004 13:45 Hrs (IST) Chennai:
MDMK (Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) leader and POTA (Prevention of Terrorism Act) detenu Vaiko today (Feb 4, 2004) filed a petition in the Madras High Court seeking to set aside some of the conditions imposed by a designated court while granting bail to him yesterday.
The conditions include restraining him from moving out of Chennai and suburban Poonamallee area in which the court is located and directing the MDMK leader to appear on all working days before the POTA court and the city magistrate on holidays.
The petition will be coming up later today.
Vaiko was arrested in July 2002 for allegedly speaking in favour of the banned LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) at a public meeting in Tirumangalam in Madurai district in June that year. He had moved the Special Court, seeking bail on Jan 13, a day after eight party colleagues, who were also arrested along with him, were granted bail by the Madras High Court.
