Mumbai blast accused Abu Salem to be extradited
Thursday, February 5 2004 19:08 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: A Portugal court has ordered extradition of Abu Salem to India to face trial in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts case.

Official sources said that the Portuguese High Court agreed to the Indian petition for extradition of the underworld don to face trial in India.

Salem is already undergoing a four-and-a-half year sentence in Portugal for obstructing Government officials from performing their duty and entering that country with forged documents.

Salem reserves the right to appeal against the judgement in the Portuguese Supreme Court, the sources said.

The hearing in the extradition case pertaining to Salem had ended in 2003. He was arrested by the Portuguese authorities on the basis of Interpol Red Corner Notice issued at the behest of the Indian investigation agency.

The Portuguese court has already ordered extradition of his girlfriend, Monica Bedi, who has also filed a review petition in the Supreme Court.

Salem and Bedi have already been awarded jail terms by a Portuguese court after they were found guilty of entering the country on forged documents.

Salem, who was arrested along with Bedi and two others on September 21, 2002 in Lisbon, was sentenced to four-and-a-half years imprisonment on three counts -- entering Portugal on forged documents, causing injury to a policeman who was performing his duty and perjury.

The Portuguese Government has dropped one of the three charges against Salem - of marrying a local girl to get a resident permit.

However, the trial for two other charges -- obstructing Government officials in performing their duty and entering Portugal with forged documents -- was going on.

The Indian Government had already given an assurance to the Portuguese Government that neither Salem nor Bedi would be awarded with death penalty, in case the courts convicted them.
