Trained in counter terrorist operations, the Indian Air Force (IAF) today (Feb 5, 2004) raised its own commando force to protect its vital installations.
The first batch of the force, christened 'Garud', comprising 62 air commandoes, passed out in the presence of senior Air Force officials and the cadets' proud parents in New Delhi.
These airmen would be positioned at various Air Force Stations and will be responsible for their security against any terrorist attacks.
They would also be responsible for the security of vital Air Force installations like radars and airfields in border areas.
The Force has been raised on the lines of Special Forces Commandoes of the Indian Army and MARCOS of the Indian Navy.
Also, 'Garud' commandoes can be called upon to undertake missions like neutralising terrorist hideouts, combat, search and rescue, paramilitary operations and other activities like helping in relief and rehabilitation in various emergencies and natural calamities.
At the parade, the commandoes displayed skills in countering terrorist operations, climbing of buildings and shooting at static and moving adversaries, which they had acquired in their six-month training.
"The initial strength of the force would be around 1,080 divided into 15 different flights based at different Air Force stations," Air Marshall Narayan Menon, Air Officer in Charge, Personnel, who reviewed the passing out parade, said.
After induction, these airmen will undergo advanced training including anti-hijack and counter insurgency operations, jungle and snow survival techniques, specialised weapon handling and advanced driving skills, Menon added.
