Srinagar: Four Army jawans were killed and several others were injured when militants detonated an IED (improvised explosive device) on Khannabal-Pahalgam road in Anantnag this morning (Feb 5, 2004), a Defence spokesman said.

The incident occurred around 06:00 hours (IST) when an Army vehicle reached Sakaras and four jawans were killed on the spot, the spokesman said.

The injured jawans have been airlifted to the Army base hospital at Srinagar, he said, without giving the exact figure of those wounded.

No militant outfit has claimed responsibility for the incident, he added.

However, official sources said pro-Pakistan Hizbul Mujahideen is believed to be responsible for the incident.
