Pak revelations on nuke network 'tip of the iceberg' Thursday, February 5 2004 18:10 Hrs (IST) Vienna:
The latest revelations about a clandestine network for transfer of nuclear technology, from the father of Pakistan atom bomb, Dr A Q Khan, are just the "tip of the iceberg" about illegal trafficking, UN nuclear watchdog chief Mohamed ElBaradei said today (Feb 5, 2004).
Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan, chief of Khan Research Laboratories, revered as a hero in Pakistan for founding the country's nuclear programme, had begged forgiveness in an extraordinary broadcast televised to the nation on Wednesday (Feb 4) where he admitted leaking nuclear secrets abroad.
Investigators earlier said Khan had shared sensitive nuclear technology with Iran, Libya and North Korea for more than a decade.
ElBaradei, the head of International Atomic Energy Agency, told reporters in Vienna "Dr Khan is the tip of the iceberg for us."
He said Khan "was not working alone".
"We need to follow this through. We need to know who was producing centrifuges", that can be used to make highly enriched uranium for atomic bombs.
"We have to make sure it will not be repeated," ElBaradei said about the clandestine nuclear transfer.
