JK militancy is freedom struggle: Musharraf Friday, February 6 2004 09:46 Hrs (IST) Islamabad:
Sticking to his oft-stated stance on Kashmir, President Pervez Musharraf today (Feb 05, 2004) said that Pakistan considered the militancy in Kashmir as freedom struggle and not terrorism and he would continue to hold the view until the international community reached a consensus on defining terrorism.
Replying to a question at a briefing to editors that United States (US) did not agree with the Pakistan stand on differentiating freedom struggle and terrorism he said Pakistan has its own stand on the issue.
"Yes that may be the US stand. Pakistan stand is very clear. Whatever is happening in Kashmir, we do not call it terrorism, certainly. There is a freedom struggle going on there," he said.
Musharraf said there was no consensus on the definition of terrorism. "Nobody has been able to define what is terrorism really. In my speech at UN, I said we need to define what is terrorism," he said.
Musharraf also declined to outline a final solution to resolve Kashmir issue. He said talks between the two countries were beginning from February 17 to discuss the modalities to
start the composite Indo-Pak dialogue.
"Certainly there has to be a committee to discuss Kashmir," he said adding that it was too early to discuss solutions.
