Saturday, February 7 2004 09:52 Hrs (IST)

Koraput/Jagdalpur: Striking in a big way on key police installations in quick succession, armed naxalites of People's War Group tonight (Feb 06,2004) stormed the district headquarter of Orissa killing a policeman and injuring a jail superintendent before escaping with 200 weapons.

The ultras attacked the district jail after snatching a weapon from the sentry and opened fire injuring the jail superintendent who rushed out after hearing gunfire.

They then opened fire on the city police station and Sadar police camp, the office of district Superintendent of Police Arun Bothra, the treasury and the 3rd battalion of Orissa Special Armed Police Centre, taking the cops completely by surprise, police sources said. Bothra was not in his office at the time of the attack.

The naxalites fired indiscriminately spreading panic and attacked nearby police reserve office where they took away 200 weapons and ammunition, Giridhar Naik, IGP of Jagdalpur, which is 108km from Koraput said.

The sources said they abducted the Officer-in-charge of Koraput police station Sarat Kumar Buruda and took away his cellphone but later left him unharmed.

When the ultras stormed the SP's office, they shot at the constable on guard killing him on the spot. He was identified as Narasingha Nayak.

Reports said there was little resistance from the police which was caught by surprise by the suddenness of the attacks.

A few from among the naxalites even addressed the people at the nearby bus stand saying they did not want to harm the public.

The ultras raised slogans and pasted a few posters here and there on which was written in Telugu "we want revolution, we want liberation".

They also took away four vehicles, a jeep belonging to the Chief District Medical Officer's office, a private jeep and two private mini-trucks.
