Attack on scribe: Advocates go on daylong strike Monday, February 9 2004 11:55 Hrs (IST) Ahmedabad:
Advocates across the State would observe a day long strike, as a protest to demand action against the police official who registered an offence of dacoity against lawyers for allegedly beating up TV journalists in a local court premise on January 29 after the "cash-for-warrants" scam was exposed.
The strike, called by Gujarat High Court Advocates' Association, would be effective across the State, claimed the association president Yatin Oza.
Oza said, "Though the attack on mediapersons was regrettable, we demand action against the police officer for registering an offence of dacoity against the alleged lawyers as the section was uncalled for."
The Metropolitan Court advocates had earlier called a strike on two occasions and got only moderate support from other parts of the State.
Oza said there would not be any demonstration by advocates but they would refrain from attending court proceedings, no matter how urgent the matter was.
When told that the atmosphere in the metropolitan court had become hostile for journalists, Oza had earlier assured that he would "ensure that scribes are not attacked again and they would be able to attend court as earlier without any fear".
The scam was exposed in which three lawyers are alleged to have connived with a magistrate and issued bailable warrants against the President of India, Chief Justice of Supreme Court and other judiciary members in exchange of money.
