SDF-headed Sikkim Assembly dissolved by Governor Wednesday, February 11 2004 19:44 Hrs (IST) Rangpo (Sikkim):
Sikkim Governor V Rama Rao today (Feb 11, 2004) dissolved the Sikkim House on the recommendation of the Pawan Chamling Government to pave the way for simultaneous Assembly and Lok Sabha polls in the State.
Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling drove down in the afternoon from Gangtok to Rangpo, where the Governor is currently, and submitted the letter of his Cabinet recommending dissolution of the House with immediate effect.
The Governor asked Chamling to carry on a caretaker Government.
Chamling later told reporters at this town on the Sikkim-West Bengal border, "We want to go to the people as early as possible along with the Lok Sabha, not only to save money, but also in the larger interest of the people of the State.
The Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) Government headed by Chamling was due to complete its term in September 2004.
Earlier in the morning the Chamling Cabinet met in Gangtok, the State capital to recommend dissolution of the Assembly to the Governor.
