'Feel good' factor is akin to 'day-dreaming': Sonia
Wednesday, February 11 2004 20:39 Hrs (IST)

Basti (UP): Attacking the BJP's (Bharatiya Janata Party) election buzzword for the coming Lok Sabha polls, Congress President Sonia Gandhi today (Feb 11, 2004) said its "feel-good" factor was akin to "day-dreaming" as the vast majority of people remained bogged down by poverty and unemployment.

"Poverty and unemployment in the region are on the rise", she said on the concluding day of her three-day campaign trail in Eastern Uttar Pradesh.

"No one is really feeling good", the Congress President said observing that region lacked basic facilities such as health, housing and roads.

Women in rural areas were living in abject poverty and in poor health as many of them did not even have huts to live in, she said adding that their condition was, in fact, indicative of the all round failure of the NDA (National Democratic Alliance) Government.

Exhorting people to vote for the Congress, she said Uttar Pradesh lagged behind in development during the successive non-Congress regimes.

"Whatever development was visible in the area was undertaken by Congress Governments, she claimed in a series of meetings in Dubaula, Pakhra, Narkhoria, Bhanpur, Sonaha, Gopalpur and Manau village in the district.

Sugar mills of the area had closed down and cane dues of farmers not yet cleared, she alleged promising to restart the closed sugar factories if voted to power.
