Militants attack Manipur CM's private house

Imphal: Unidentified militants attacked the private house of Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh at Athokpam area in interior Thoubal district yesterday (Feb 11, 2004) but no casualty was reported, an official report said.

Heavily armed militants opened fire at Singh's house at around 8.40 pm yesterday from different sides and security guards posted there also returned the fire.

The exchange lasted for some minutes, the report said adding that the attackers escaped in different directions in the darkness.

Singh stays at the official bungalow in Imphal.

The motive behind the attack was not yet known, the sources said.

The separatist Manipur People' Liberation Front is reportedly active in the district.

Militants of the banned People's Liberation Army had attacked Singh early last year in Thoubal district and killed two of his security guards, the sources added.
