Day not far for proxy war in JK to end: Centre Saturday, February 14 2004 17:47 Hrs (IST) Jalandhar:
Over 225 hideouts of Pakistani intelligence agency Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) have been destroyed in the country during the last four years, Union Minister of State for Home I D Swami today (Feb 14, 2004) said claiming that the day was not far for the proxy war in Jammu and Kashmir to end.
"The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Government has already destroyed over 225 ISI hideouts in the country during its over four-year tenure and the day is not far when we will also win the proxy war in the valley, which is in its last phase," Swami told reporters.
He said that the infiltration in the valley has declined due to ceasefire being observed along the borders, but declined to comment whether the Pakistani Army has stopped helping terrorist outfits.
"The environment in the valley has changed, which can be judged from the increased number of tourists thronging the hill State," he said giving credit for such an environment to Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee, who created such a situation through his diplomatic policies.
"The change in Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf's attitude sends the signals that the situation in the valley would improve very soon," the Minister said apparently referring to the commitment made by Musharraf in the recent SAARC Summit that Pakistan would not allow terrorists to operate from its soil.
On the Centre's talks with the Hurriyat Conference, he said they were "very successful" and that the next round of talks to be held in March would go as per schedule.
