All parties vote for one-day polls in EC meeting
Friday, February 20 2004 15:43 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: An all party meeting convened by Election Commission (EC) today (Feb 20, 2004) demanded that in the absence of adequate number of poll identity cards, the Commission should allow all those whose names figure in the electoral roll to exercise their franchise.

After a marathon meeting presided over by the Chief Election Commissioner T S Krishnamurthy, Janata Dal (United) parliamentary board chairman Sharad Yadav said that the parties expressed the view that except in Uttar Pradesh, all States should have a one-day poll.

"The parties also suggested that Election Commission should take into consideration issues like Board examinations, festivals and harvesting season before finalising the poll schedule," Yadav said adding, "It is EC's prerogative to finalise the dates."
