'Low ranking jawans sometimes violate Human Rights' Saturday, February 21 2004 22:34 Hrs (IST) New Delhi:
Admitting that low ranking Army personnel sometimes violate Human Rights in Jammu and Kashmir, Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed today (Feb 21, 2004) said the recent directive by the Centre would definitely ensure that there are no aberrations in this regard.
"Army is doing a wonderful job in tackling militancy and taking care of human interest like adoption of orphans, setting up of orphanages and health melas for the public," he told reporters on the sidelines of a Shivratri Milan in New Delhi.
"However, jawans and lower ranking officers in the Army do violate Human Rights in the State, but a recent directive by Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani will definitely ensure that there is no Human Rights aberration in the State," Sayeed said when asked for his reaction on Bandipora massacre.
The calling of an emergency meeting by Advani himself in which Chief of Army Staff Gen N C Vij was also present was a clear indication of Centre's seriousness in ending all forms of Human Rights violations in the State, he said.
To a question about withdrawal from talks by Hurriyat leader Fazal Haq Qureshi, Sayeed said, "These are small issues. I have information that many more separatist leaders outside Hurriyat conference are willing to participate in the talks."
