SIT focus now on politicians' role in Telgi scam Sunday, February 22 2004 17:24 Hrs (IST) Mumbai:
After issuing summons to former Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal and his nephew Sameer asking them to appear for questioning next week, the entire focus for investigation of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) in the fake stamp paper scam has shifted from the involvement of criminals and police officers to the role of politicians in the scam.
The SIT has asked the Bhujbals to be present at SIT office on February 25 and 26.
This is not the first instance when the SIT has probed the role of politicians in the scam since it has already arrested former Andhra Pradesh Sports Minister and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) MLA Krishna Yadav and Samajwadi Janata Party (SJP) legislator Anil Gote under the Maharashtra Control for Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) for their alleged involvement, sources said.
But Bhujbal's questioning will assume significance since he held a top-most position in the Government and appointed police officers, R S Sharma, S Wagal and Pradeep Sawant, who have been arrested in the scam.
Moreover, sources said that except Bhujbal, no other Government functionary, including the Chief Minister, has come under attack from the Opposition for allegedly shielding these tainted officers.
Sources further said that the brain-mapping and narco-analysis tests performed on kingpin Abdul Karim Telgi has also revealed that he was close to several top Government functionaries.
