Haj stampede: Victims' kin to get compensation Monday, February 23 2004 11:24 Hrs (IST) Dubai:
Relatives of Haj stampede victims who made the pilgrimage under the auspices of the Central Haj Committee will get upto Rs three lakh as compensation.
"Nine Indian pilgrims who died came through the Haj Committee and eight of them are likely to get the full compensation of Rs three lakh and one will get a lesser amount as he was above the age of 60," Syed Akbaruddin, Consulate General of India in Jeddah said.
There is no compensation from Saudi Government as the incident is seen as an act of God by the faithful.
Akbaruddin said the payout will take sometime as the formalities, including the submission of death certificate have to be completed.
Nearly 251 pilgrims, including 13 Indians were trampled to death earlier this month in a mass stampede, which occurred when devotees thronged to Mina, near Mecca in Saudi Arabia to stone a pillar representing the devil.
Out of those who were killed, the largest numbers were from Indonesia (54) followed by Pakistan (40). Most of the dead were from among illegal pilgrims.
