TRAI puts in abeyance Govt notification on CAS
Monday, February 23 2004 18:39 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) today (Feb 23, 2004) kept in abeyance Government notification for implementation of Conditional Access System (CAS) for cable TV, for at least three months pending finalisation of regulation of the cable sector.

In its interim recommendations to the Government today, TRAI, which was appointed as the regulator for the broadcasting and cable sector, said, "Studies of the cable sector in various countries have shown that the sector needs regulation till effective competition can be introduced."

"The Authority would take about three months to finalise such regulation," it said.

The interim recommendations is one of the results of the Authority's assessment of the various inputs and is part of the process of taking remedial measures to "properly address the issue of CAS."
