Jailbreak: Warden dies, Probe points at connivance Tuesday, February 24 2004 17:40 Hrs (IST) Chapra (Bihar):
The warden of the jail in Chapra, injured in explosions triggered by eight inmates to escape, succumbed today (Feb 24, 2004), even as preliminary investigation indicated involvement of some of the staff in the jailbreak.
During a search, authorities recovered explosives that the eight inmates, led by Siwan gangster Rajkishore Chaudhary, had used yesterday to trigger the blasts.
Warden Dudhnath Sharma, who sustained splinter injuries along with two prisoners, died at the Patna Medical College Hospital today.
District magistrate Baidyanath Mishra told reporters that explosives used for making bombs were recovered from the jail during an intensive search.
Mishra said preliminary investigation indicated connivance of some jail staff in the jailbreak, but nobody has been arrested or suspended.
He said a first information report (FIR) has been lodged with the Bhagwanpur police station against the escapees and raids were being conducted to nab them.
