Hurriyat pulls out of talks; says Centre not serious Wednesday, February 25 2004 12:50 Hrs (IST) Srinagar:
Under attack from hardliners, Hurriyat Conference today (Feb 25, 2004) announced suspension of talks with the Centre accusing it of not being "sincere" and said the process would resume only if the Government ended "Human Rights violation" in Jammu and Kashmir.
"The dialogue process with the Government is in suspension because there is no evidence of sincerity and seriousness on their part," Hurriyat Chairman Maulana Mohammad Abbas Ansari told reporters at a hurriedly-called press conference at the amalgam's headquarters.
Ansari said the talks could resume only after Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani fulfilled his promise of putting an end to Human Rights violations in the State before the end of this month.
"There has to be a perceptible change in the ground situation by the end of this month. If there is not, we will not go for talks with the Centre," he added.
Hardliners have been attacking Hurriyat Conference led by Ansari for not taking up the killing of five civilians, allegedly by security forces, in Bandipore seriously.
The Deputy Prime Minister at a meeting with top Army and civilian officials earlier this month had directed that utmost care should be taken to prevent all kinds of Human Rights violations.
