EC to deploy para-military to contain ultras in WB Thursday, February 26 2004 11:16 Hrs (IST) Kolkata:
Election Commission would deploy para-military forces during the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections both in North Bengal and South Bengal districts where the ultras of KLO (Kamtapur Liberation Organisation) PW (Peoples War) and MCC (Maoist Communist Centre) were active to destabilise the law and order in West Bengal.
State's Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Basudev Banerjee said today (Feb 25, 2004) that such a measure would be taken by the commission to ensure peaceful election in those districts.
Banerjee said though there were insurance schemes for accidental deaths of polling personnel during election process in some States, West Bengal had no such scheme.
Polling personnel in the State just get Rupees two lakh as compensation for deaths during election duty but there was no insurance scheme as such, the CEO said. He would take up the matter with the EC (Election Commission) for increasing the amount, the CEO said.
Banerjee said that out of 48,700 polling booths in the State, 9000 were sensitive and 1200 super sensitive, which would be brought under special security measures.
The CEO said that he had already sent to the EC a list of 110 senior officers from the State for their appointment as poll observer in other States.
