Naipaul against foreigners occupying top posts Thursday, February 26 2004 22:37 Hrs (IST) New Delhi:
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today (Feb 26, 2004) found a new supporter in Nobel laureate V S Naipaul who appeared to share the party's view on barring a person of foreign origin from occupying top posts.
"It is worth considering an idea. Americans have rules about who could be their President," he told reporters at the BJP headquarters when asked about the party's campaign against Sonia Gandhi becoming Prime Minister of India.
Naipaul, the Trinidad-born English author, who addressed a meeting of BJP's intellectual cell at the party headquarters, was asked if he approved the party's attempts to "appropriate" him.
"I don't mind," Naipaul, who was flanked by his wife Nadira, quipped.
Nadira, who had last year made some strong statements against Gujarat violence at the Pravasi Bhartiya Conference here last year, interjected to say, "Everyone should appropriate my husband."
She, however, parried questions on the Gujarat issue today.
