Vajpayee has a 'Jekyll and Hyde' personality: Cong Friday, February 27 2004 22:34 Hrs (IST) New Delhi:
Stepping up its campaign against Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee, Congress today (Feb 27, 2004) accused him of having a dual personality.
"He has always been speaking in different voices on various issues....He not only wears a mukhota but puts most Bollywood actors to shame. There is a wide variation in his saying and deeds, but even his deeds change on a daily basis," party spokesman Abhishek Singhvi told reporters.
Charging him with having a "Jekyll and Hyde" personality, he said, "People want to know from BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) in which Vajpayee's name it is seeking votes."
Referring to Ayodhya, Singhvi said Vajpayee while speaking in Parliament (during 2000-01) on the issue of chargesheeted Ministers had categorically said a "Ram temple shall be built in keeping with national sentiments".
Shortly thereafter, in his musings from Kumarakom in Kerala, he said demolition of the Babri mosque was a "flagrant violation of the law".
Visiting Gujarat after the riots, Vajpayee had asked the State Government and the people how he could travel abroad a few days later in the light of these "shameful" incidents, but two weeks afterwards at a Goa conclave of the party the Prime Minister said there was something wrong with Muslims the world over as they were "not able to co-exist peacefully".
Singhvi also recalled Vajpayee's "double" on describing himself as "swayamsewak" and the need for Muslim votes at Varanasi and construction of Ram temple before the funeral pyre of Paramhans in Ayodhya.
