The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Government's "India Shining" campaign should end with the announcement of the schedule for Lok Sabha elections, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) T S Krishnamurthy said today (Feb 29, 2004).
"Yes", he remarked when asked about ads being given out to the media at a press conference.
"It is Election Commission's interpretation that the campaigns (India Shining and Bharat Udai) should end with the implementation of the model code of conduct," he said.
He maintained that he model code should be observed by all political parties, candidates and the Government to ensure free and fair elections.
Krishnamurthy said that the code should be enforced strictly across the country for the general elections and polls to the Assemblies in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Orissa and Sikkim.
